MIGHTY METERS PROGRAM - STARTING IN FALL 2010

Zara's Center is committed to integrating healthy living with core teaching, learning, and recreation programs. To that end, Zara's leadership will work with representatives of the New York Road Runners (NYRR) to replicate the Mighty Meters program in Zimbabwe during the coming year. This program, based on NYRR's Mighty Milers program in the US, gives kids the opportunity and encouragement to get moving, release energy, improve their fitness and health, set and strive for individual goals, and bond with their schoolmates.

Zara's Center Program Manager, Shepherd Hlomayi,  will work with
NYRR through online resources to introduce students and the community to the  program -- and to integrate the program with Zara's core nutrition and healthy living initiatives. Kids of all fitness levels and abilities will learn to walk or run a prescribed, two to five times a week. Students will set goals and the online database will make it easy to record and tally the total distance each student (and the entire community) accumulates. When students reach milestones, they will earn incentives provided by Zara's Center and NYRR.

Grant funding from NYRR will seed the program, with matching funds provided by PG Family Foundation.
